ASUS Drops VR Plans, Launches ROG XREAL R1 AR Gaming Glasses Instead
ASUS has officially changed its direction in immersive tech. After discontinuing plans for a Horizon OS–based VR headset, the company has introduced the ROG XREAL R1 AR gaming glasses, signaling a major shift toward lightweight, screen-based augmented reality designed for gamers.
This move places ASUS squarely in the growing AR display market, offering a large virtual screen experience without the bulk or isolation of traditional VR headsets.

A Giant Virtual Screen — Without a Headset
The ROG XREAL R1 features a 240Hz micro-OLED display that delivers ultra-smooth visuals ideal for competitive gaming and high-frame-rate content. The glasses simulate a massive virtual display, making them suitable for gaming, movies, and productivity on the go.
Unlike standalone VR devices, the R1 acts as an external display rather than a self-contained computer, keeping the hardware light and portable.
Built for Gamers, Designed for Flexibility
The AR glasses connect via USB-C to gaming PCs, handheld consoles, and compatible devices. ASUS also includes a ROG Control Dock, allowing HDMI and DisplayPort connections for broader device support.
This approach lets users plug in and play across multiple platforms without being locked into a single ecosystem.
